The Pescheria island is a river island in the historic center of Treviso, surrounded by Cagnan Grando. As the name suggests, it hosts the city fish market. Towards the middle of the nineteenth century the need arose for a redevelopment of the then Piazza dei Signori, a characteristic area of the city. This need was given by hygienic-sanitary and structural reasons. Move the location of the forger market that was a source of disturbance to the senses of citizens. The fish market, in fact, brought with it unpleasant smells for the inhabitants of that area. Pietro Liberali had the intuition of the new arrangement and was built in 1856, during the Austrian domination of the city, on the initiative of the then mayor. The works were designed by the municipal engineer Francesco Bomben who brought together in one island the three natural islets already present in the canal, downstream of the bridge of San Parisio. The new arrangement proved to be optimal since it benefited from running water and a more appropriate distance from the inhabited buildings. The fish market, previously held in the square in front of the Monte di Pietà, was then moved to this place. The connection with the market consists of an iron bridge. The project of the last redevelopment, which saw the remaking of the pavement and the market benches, was signed by the architect Toni Follina. This restructuring has maintained the original structure, has allowed to realize the cover to the benches of the fish and this intervention has given way to the square to acquire public character. In the neighboring areas of the market there are numerous commercial activities, public places and shops that make the area very popular especially in the morning. This area is well representative of the entire city with its colors and scents of typical local dishes.
